Why You Need an Internship (and SOON!)

The perfect college experience doesn’t have a formula, every student does something differently. There’s nothing wrong with relying on building relationships on your campus or sticking to the traditional job titles that you may have had in high school - like camp counselor, bartender, babysitter, etc. In addition to the lessons you learn in class, all of these things are great. But if you’re looking for something a little extra the most important thing you can do outside of the classroom is get an internship. Today’s workforce is super competitive so being able to separate yourself from the competition is key.
The best place to start looking is your University. Departments are always looking for students to help out, and they always offer some great opportunities. If that doesn’t work, LinkedIn Jobs is a life saver. Thousands of companies use the tool to search for candidates like yourself!
What Makes an Internship So Important?
  • Confidence Builder: Chances are you probably don’t have a ton of work experience, but that’s totally okay. As college students we tend to get scared of the real world and the thought of applying for jobs. An internship will help you gain the confidence you need to take the next step in your professional career. Internships are incredible learning experiences, and employers always try to make sure you take away valuable lessons.
  • Experience: An internship is probably going to be your first chance to see how an actual company operates. And more often than not, you’ll be spending your time working with different departments, giving you the opportunity to gain valuable skills across the board. When you complete an internship you’ll be WAY more prepared to enter the working world.
  • Networking: Gaining skills before entering the real world is important, but just as crucial is expanding your professional network. If you put in your best effort I guarantee you’ll leave your internship with some incredibly valuable resources. Your employers will be more than willing to vouch for you in any future endeavors you may have. But be careful. Just because you intern somewhere doesn’t necessarily mean you’re guaranteed a position. Make sure to be responsible, respectful and do your best.
  • Earn Credit: Most college have programs that allow you to earn course credit for your time with an internship. In fact, some degree programs even require that you complete an internship before graduating. Instead of being forced to sit through boring lectures take the chance to learn something that will actually be useful moving forward. Make sure to follow College Hill on social media accounts and be on the lookout for our next marketing or graphic design internships!
  • Money: If you can’t earn credit for your internship then you’ll probably have the opportunity to make some cash. And honestly as college students who wouldn’t love some extra cash flowing in?
  • Job Opportunities: Don’t be surprised if you finish an internship and the company you worked for wants to hire you on. Sure, you can’t just coast through the entire process but if you work hard your employer will notice.
Internships really are what you make them, so if you’re lucky enough to land one make the most of it. No two internships are alike, each one brings something unique and a chance to learn something new. Don’t be satisfied because you’ve completed an internship either!
The more experience you can gain the better! If you go in with the right mindset almost anything is possible. I wouldn’t be in the position I am today if it wasn’t for the internships and experiences I’ve had.

So if you’re on the fence about applying for an internship…
